What is an MRA?

MRA (Magnetic Resonance Angiogram or MR Angiogram) is a type of MRI test that let's your doctor see inside the blood vessels to help identify abnormalities.

What are some common uses of the procedure?

MRA is used to examine blood vessels in different parts of the body:

Your doctor may request the procedure to:

MRA is also used as a substitute for CT Angiography and may require a contrast, which is injected into a vein to highlight portions of the heart or blood vessels. This contrast agent often is used for people who are allergic to the dyes used in CT scanning.

People who have severe kidney or liver problems may not be able to have the contrast agent. As a result, they may have an MRI that doesn't use the substance (a non-contrast MRI).

How do I prepare for an MRI?

Most MRI scans do not require any specific preparation. However, because MRI uses a strong magnetic field, please notify your physician or our office prior to your exam if you have a pacemaker, artificial heart valve or any other metal inside your body.

Important key reminders:

What can I expect during and after the exam?

During the exam, you will lie inside of a tunnel that is open at both ends. The procedure is completely painless. A Technologist will monitor the exam at all times, and a speaker system will keep you connected to the Technologist. Depending on the type of exam ordered, a special tool (or coil) may be used to enhance certain areas of the body. The average time for an MRI is 30-45 minutes and during that time the machine will make loud knocking or clicking sounds. This is perfectly normal, and for your comfort, music can be provided to listen to while you are having the exam. Ear plugs are also provided should you need them. Once the exam is complete, one of Arcadia Radiology Medical Group's Radiologists will interpret the exam and report the findings to your referring physician.

ARMG also offers MRI services for children. For specific instructions regarding MRI for children, or for any other information please contact us.
